Series 1–Families of primary school aged children
February – April 2015
A brief overview of what we will discuss in each workshop:
Week 1 You and Your Life
Thinking about your child’s needs and the life you want to live as a family unit. Explore what it means to live a good life, particularly when you have a child that lives with a disability. Is it just about having enough supports or is it something more?
Week 2 Making a Plan
It is so difficult finding the time for planning. We explore what people find most helpful when thinking about their child’s future. Primary school aged children begin entering the NDIS from April 2015. These workshops will help you to think about the future and plan for the NDIS.
Week 3 Choices and Voices
Being an informed Decision-Maker; we look at the NDIS and how it affects the choices you have and the decisions you can make, as well as recognizing that everyone has a voice.
Week 4 Connected
Navigating your way into community life. A good life includes friends and acquaintances for you and your child. These come from spending time with other people in our communities. We discuss ways families can find out what’s happening in their community and get involved.
Week 5 Choosing Your Personal Assistance
It’s your support. We look at the relationship between a person and the paid helpers, and what you might look for when choosing a person or agency to help you and your child.
Week 6 My Home, My Castle
Creating your sanctuary; we look at the difference between a house, a home and a support staff workplace, and what is most important to you. How do you (balance the various needs) or (balance the individual needs within your family)
Week 7 Safeguarding For a Good Life
Every parent worries about how they can keep their child safe. This worry may be magnified when your child has a disability, especially as they branch out in their life.
This project was made possible with assistance from Disability ACT and the ACT NDIS Taskforce with funding from the Commonwealth Government NDIS sector development fund.
