This conference replay is currently only open to people who attended the conference in May. We plan to open it to a broader audience on the 23rd of September.
About the Conference
Families with people with disability often worry about who will keep their family member safe and how their family member’s vision of a good life be safeguarded. This conference aims to address this worry and provide information, strategies and tips exploring several themes connected to safeguarding the future of people with disability.
We hope you find the information, stories and ideas helpful.
The key themes include;
- People keep people safe – nurturing neighbour relationships, friendships and circles of support
- Support for decision-making – helping families and chosen allies support people with disability engage in everyday decision-making; understand advocacy that respects self-agency;
- Siblings carrying the Vision forward – hearing from Siblings of people with disability in how they are involved in their family members’ life
- Financial security – exploring themes of maintaining employment, sustaining a micro-enterprise, and efficient financial planning.
- The unsavoury administrative necessities – navigating wills, trusts and guardianships
- Friendship, relationships and connections – exploring the nuances of relationships/friendships and how to support people with an intellectual disability navigate relationships
- Self-direction – being the natural authority of your own life. Staying in the driver’s seat and not handing over to services.
You will hear many stories from people with disability, their parents and siblings on how they all worked together to safeguard the future of the person with disability. The stories will highlight the importance of holding valued social roles and their impact on safeguarding. For example, a sibling’s story on how they supported their sister to find and keep a home of their own; A story about an aspiring school-aged author taking charge of her life.
The speakers at the conference come from all over Australia and overseas. They come with a shared view of helping people with disability live full and inclusive lives that are safeguarded into the future.
Keep track of the sessions you might like to share with your children, broader family network & friends as we plan to open registrations up to a broader audience on the 23rd September. We will need to capture their registration details as this is a federally funded conference.
