Location: 59 Cameron Avenue Conference and Event Centre, Belconnen ACT
Presented by: Sam Paior
Do you love someone with disability and wonder how their life might change if you were suddenly not around?
We tend not to want to think about the day we won’t be here to run it all, so making a solid plan for the future is one of the most important things a family can do.
To help you get started, you’re invited to a free, practical workshop in Canberra on creating a Drop Dead Box. A Drop Dead Box is a central place for all the practical plans, key information, and safeguards your family needs so the person you love can thrive when you’re no longer here.
This session will be led by Sam Paior, founder of The Growing Space. Sam is a parent and advocate who speaks in plain, straightforward language to help families navigate complex support and planning systems. If you’ve been to any of her workshops or conference presentations, you’ll already know to expect a workshop filled with practical advice.
What the workshop will cover
Sam will help answer your questions and break down big planning topics into clear steps:
- The essentials: How to plan for a good home and a full life
- Community connections: Building strong friendships and exploring Circles of Support or Microboards
- Legal and financial basics: Simple explanations of Wills, Powers of Attorney, Trusts, Advance Care Directives, and Executors
- Safeguards: Key protections to put in place for safety and peace of mind
- Creating your own Drop Dead Box: What practical information and documents to include so others can support your family member well.
Who should attend?
This free event is for families of people with disability who want to feel confident, empowered, and prepared for the future.
Good to know
- This is an in-person event in Canberra. It will not be recorded or livestreamed. The only way to attend is in person

Sam Paior
Sam Paior is the founder and CEO of The Growing Space, a purpose-driven initiative created to help people make sense of complex systems and be more in control of their lives, while employing almost exclusively disabled people and carers.
Sam works and volunteers nationally in the disability sector and is in her sixth year on the NDIS Independent Advisory Council. She also brings something more important – lived experience as a mum to two (stellar) young men with disabilities.
Her work focuses on making things clearer and more human, especially within the NDIS. Sam is known for translating confusing information into practical, everyday language that families can actually use.
What drives her is simple: to lessen those lost, overwhelmed, alone feelings when supporting their child or planning their future.
In her presentations, Sam shares real stories, practical strategies, and ideas people can take home and use straight away. She wants families to leave more confident, more informed, and knowing there is a community around them who “get it”.
Outside work, she’s in the garden, trail running with a dog, or playing bananagrams with her boys – her happy places.
