What this workshop is about

Home is a vital part of our lives. It provides us with security, privacy, comfort, and control. It also reflects our identity and adulthood, giving us a deep sense of who we are and how we connect and belong in our neighbourhood.

Yet for many people, particularly those with intellectual disability and Autism, home is designed by others. Individuals are left with little control over the decisions that most people take for granted. Some families wonder if it’s even possible for their family members to live in their own homes.

In this practical and interactive workshop, we will explore individualised and innovative ways that people with disability have used to create their own homes while getting the support they need.

Guest speaker – Katrina Sneath

Katrina SneathKatrina is a passionate self-advocate and wants to advocate for other people with intellectual disability.

As a child, Katrina lived in England and, for a time, in France, attending the local schools.

Katrina has previously worked as a legal aid, interviewer, co-researcher, and advocate. She currently works as a project administrator for 3DN at the University of New South Wales, helping to support the health and well-being of people with cognitive disability. She enjoys public speaking and has presented at many conferences, including the World Down Syndrome Congresses in Glasgow and Brisbane.

Katrina moved to Sydney nearly six years ago and loves living there. She lives independently in a private rental one-bedroom flat, while her parents live in New Zealand and her siblings in Queensland. Katrina enjoys travelling independently on public transport and national and international air travel. She dreams of going to New York one day.

In her spare time, Katrina enjoys diamond painting, cycling, singing, dancing, and watching movies. She hopes to learn to play the ukulele.
