Seeing is believing!

If you attended last year’s Opening Opportunities conference, you’ll already have seen the power of a visual resume in demonstrating the capacity and skills of people with disability.

A visual resume captures images and information highlighting the person’s interests and skills. When employers see photographic evidence of the person’s competencies, they are more likely to see how well they could fit into their organisation.

Example page of a visual resume showing a young man opening a box with a box cutter alongside details of his retail work experience.

Developing an effective visual resume requires some thought and planning. Each image is carefully selected to showcase the person’s skill set authentically.

Visual resumes can be used to secure

  • Work experience opportunities
  • Paid employment
  • Volunteering roles.

Here’s your opportunity to create a visual resume for your family member with disability with some guidance and support.

First, watch an on-demand replay of the Developing a visual resume workshop.

Register to watch an on-demand replay of our 2023 workshop about visual resumes. In this 45-minute workshop, Customised Employment Consultant Milton Tyree explained

  • how and where in the Customised Employment process the visual resume sits
  • what language is most effective in enhancing the person’s skills and strengths
  • how many and what kind of photos should be included
  • when to use the visual resume
  • and much more.

This replay is free and is open to anyone who wants to help a person with intellectual disability or autism enjoy all the benefits of being gainfully employed, including

  • Family members
  • Friends and colleagues
  • Educators and career professionals
  • Employment service providers
  • Job supporters

The on-demand replay is available from now until Thursday, 9 May.

Then, join us on Thursday, 9 May, to start building your own visual resume.

We’re running a live interactive session for families on Thursday, 9 May. Come along to ask questions as you create a visual resume for your family member.

This session is designed to be interactive and engaging, so we encourage you to come prepared with the following, if available:

  • The findings from your family member’s Discovery process (but don’t worry if you haven’t done this yet)
  • Your own reflections on any skills, no matter how minor, that your family member may have demonstrated at home, school, through work experience, volunteering, paid work, or in any informal roles.

We want you to feel relaxed and supported during this session, so feel free to enjoy your lunch while attending the webinar. You can choose whether to keep your video on or off, as we respect your privacy.
