Our experience in setting up a food-based micro-enterprise

Erosha Bakmiwewa describes the process she followed in helping her daughter to set up a food-based microenterprise.

In this presentation, Erosha Bakmiwewa shares the story of her 16-year-old daughter, Sethmi, who is exploring the business world with her unique micro-business. Through ‘Serendib Treats, Sethmi makes and sells delicious Sri Lankan bliss balls.

Initially identifying her interests through various activities, Erosha helped Sethmi establish the micro-business, which now operates with all necessary licenses and meets food safety regulations. The business also serves as an educational tool for Sethmi, allowing her to learn about bookkeeping, marketing, and business operations.

Erosha discusses the challenges their family faced, especially in balancing school and business responsibilities. She also describes the support and encouragement they received from the community.

Sethmi’s story highlights the importance of motivation, support, and continuous discovery in the pursuit of Customised Employment for people with disability.

This video was recorded during our Customised Employment Peer Group meeting in August 2024.
