Sherryn West
With over 20 years’ experience in the not-for-profit sector, Sherryn has dedicated her career to advocacy, systems navigation, and supporting people to access the services and safeguards they need. She is now the Founder and CEO of a medium-sized NDIS plan management business.
Sherryn is the sister of Marisha, a person with disability living her best life in a home of her own. Sherryn brings a unique and deeply personal perspective as a sibling who has navigated the loss of a parent and the realities of stepping into advocacy and decision-making responsibilities. Her journey includes working through the NDIS and QCAT systems while trying to balance what so many siblings wrestle with: being “just a sister,” while also being the person who can step up when needed.

Beyond the parents: Safeguarding home and the sibling relationship
This presentation by sisters Sherryn West and Marisha Targett explores what happens when the role of a parent changes, and siblings begin to step forward, often bringing both responsibility and an unravelling of what was. It considers how to navigate that shift while trying to remain “just a sister,” and the importance of thinking ahead about who comes next, so as not to create another unravelling.
At its heart, this is the story of supporting a sister in continuing to live a good life in a home of her own, while holding on to a clear vision of what a good life looks like now, and how that evolves over time. The session reflects on the tension between relationship and responsibility, and how to stay connected as sisters while safeguarding home, wellbeing and the everyday life that matters. Through honest reflections, it shares lessons learned and what is still being figured out along the way.
