Jan Kruger’s insights into the International Social Role Valorisation (SRV) Conference in Canada

Jet-lagged but brimming with ideas, Jan returned to work last Thursday after attending the International SRV Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. During her visit, she caught up with Janet Klees, Michael Kendrick, Milton Tyree, and many other outstanding SRV practitioners from across the globe. It was a long way to travel, but a brilliant opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with old friends.

As expected, Jan was inspired by stories about people with disability living meaningful lives, driven by their families using SRV principles.

She was particularly intrigued by a presentation about service organisations being assessed by a rigorous evaluation process. Based on Model Coherency, the evaluation sought to determine how closely the organisation’s stated aims, services, and processes aligned with the realities of its service delivery and the experiences of its clients. While the results of such an evaluation often fall short of an organisation’s expectations, meaning they often don’t bring about the outcomes they intend for their clients, it can be a powerful tool for driving improvement if the organisation is willing to change.

We’re very glad Jan is back home and are excited about implementing some of the new ideas she brought back from the conference.
