We Need Your Feedback About the National Disability Strategy

The Commonwealth Government is reviewing the National Disability Strategy (NDS). This process is occurring in cooperation with state and territory governments across Australia.

What is the National Disability Strategy?

The Strategy is a plan to create an inclusive Australian society that enables people with disability to fulfil their potential as equal members of the community. It’s also the main way that Australia implements the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Around 1 in 5 people have a disability in Australia. In the ACT there are approximately 77,300 people with disability.

You can read the strategy document here.

The Office of Disability ACT

The Office for Disability ACT wants to hear from you about what should be included in the next 10-year plan. They want to make sure that the next national commitment to supporting people with disability includes the priorities of people with disability and their supporters.

They will ensure that these views

  • are taken into account for developing the next NDS
  • inform the work done by the Office to support people with disability in the ACT.

The ACT defines disability as people who experience long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may affect their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. To provide full and effective participation for people with disability, the following must change:

  • the physical environment
  • attitudes
  • the way we communicate
  • our social environment
