Sheree Henley's presentation was called Safeguarding Isaac's good life through a Service for One.
Sheree has worked in many different industries and has experience as a high school teacher (in Australia and the UK), web content editor, business analyst, IT project manager, researcher, and senior consultant at Microboards Australia.
In 2020, Sheree founded The Good Life Builders. As Managing Director, Sheree supports parents who have an adult child with disability in building a good life in the community for their sons and daughters.
Sheree is the mum of Isaac, a former Canberra resident who now lives in Hervey Bay, QLD. Isaac remains a Canberra Raiders fan, assistant storeman, gym member, gardener, much-loved friend, brother, son, and soon-to-be Uncle.
Isaac is supported by a “service for one,” a family-owned and governed not-for-profit organisation called Isaac’s Band Pty Ltd that only provides services to Isaac. A board comprised of Isaac’s family and friends who know him well assists with overseeing the operation of Isaac’s Band Pty Ltd as well as building and safeguarding Isaac’s good life.
Safeguarding Isaac’s good life through a Service for One
A Service for One is a family-owned and governed not-for-profit organisation that directly employs support for a family member with disability. Sheree and her husband David have set up a Service for One around their son Isaac.
Isaac’s Band Pty Ltd only provides services to Isaac. A board comprised of Isaac’s family and friends who know him well assists with overseeing the operation of Isaac’s Band Pty Ltd as well as building and safeguarding Isaac’s good life.
As well as bringing about better quality, more reliable and stable support for Isaac, Sheree and David have found that this model has reduced their stress and workload. They are able to focus more on just being Mum and Dad now that they no longer have to manage the daily tasks around Isaac’s supports. Having a governance board also puts succession planning strategies in place for when they are no longer around.
Sheree outlined what the Service for One model is, why she chose this model, how it provides safeguards, and the key steps to set it up.
